Q This week we are talking about employment. In this assignment you are going to focus on the wage gap. The first part is to define and explain characteristics of the wage gap. Then I want you to research a specific career. It can be your future or just a career in general. Part I • How is the wage gap defined? • How is the wage gap impacted by gender, race, age, region of the country? Part II • What is the career you are going to research? • What is the current wage gap between men and women, and even race if you can find that? • What are the demographics of people in this career - gender, race, education level, etc.? • Has there been any significant changes to this career over the past 20 years (change in gender ratio, education requirements, reduction of positions, etc.)? • Calculate how much more a man would make in this field if the wage gap did not change over a 25 year period. • Are you surprised by the information you found out about wage gap in general and the wage gap in the chosen career? Part I ? A wage gap is the difference of pay a person gets depending on gender, race, age, or region. ? As far as gender and race the wage gap for a police officer is small to nothing at all. However, depending on where you live,it can impact what you get paid. In New York alone, there are discrepancies. The New York City Police Department starts with an annual salary of 42,500 with 60 college credits. The Suffolk County Police department starts with 63,845 and you don’t even need any college credits. I know this due to my own interest in the departments.
